New Year 2026 Scam Alert: Beware of WhatsApp Greeting Links – Hidden Malware Can Steal Your Bank Data

top-news

§  Cyber Alert

§  Fake New Year 2026 WhatsApp greeting links can install malware & steal bank info

§  Police warn against clicking ‘gift’ links

§  Dial 1930 for help. Stay safe now

New Year 2026 WhatsApp Scam Alert – Diptota Dey: As the world prepares to welcome 2026, a dangerous digital threat is hiding behind those colorful “Happy New Year” messages popping up on your phone. Cybercrime authorities across India, including the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB), have issued an urgent warning: Beware of fake greeting links.

That innocent-looking message promising a “Surprise Gift” or a “Personalized 2026 Greeting” could actually be a trap designed to steal your personal photos, read your OTPs and drain your bank account in seconds.

Here is the full truth about this scam, how it works and exactly what you need to do to stay safe.

The Scam: A “Gift” You Can’t Return

According to cyber police in Hyderabad and across the country, fraudsters are flooding WhatsApp and Telegram with messages that look like legitimate festive wishes. These messages often come with catchy text like

·       “Someone sent you a special New Year 2026 surprise.! Click to view.”

·       “Claim your New Year 2026 gift from [Popular Brand].!”

·       “See your personalized 3D greeting card here.!”

The danger starts the moment you click.
Instead of opening a greeting card, the link often downloads a malicious file (usually an APK file) onto your Android phone. This happens silently in the background. Once installed, this “malware” acts like a spy in your pocket.

How the Malware Attacks Your Phone

Authorities warn that this isn’t just a simple virus; it’s sophisticated spyware. Once it infects your device, it can

       i.          Steal Bank Data: It can read your SMS messages, meaning it can intercept One-Time Passwords (OTPs) sent by your bank, allowing hackers to bypass two-factor authentication.

ii.          Hijack Your WhatsApp: In a scary twist, the malware can take control of your WhatsApp account and automatically forward the same scam link to all your friends, family and office groups. This “chain reaction” makes the scam spread like wildfire because people trust links coming from contacts they know.

iii.          Access Private Data: It can quietly access your photo gallery, contact list and even your camera or microphone.

TGCSB Chief Shikha Goel issued a stark warning: “People believe they are opening a greeting card but in reality, they are handing over the keys to their bank account.”

Why You Fall for It (Psychological Trick)

This scam relies on trust, not fear.

·       The Trusted Sender: You often receive the link from a friend or family member (whose phone is likely already infected). You think, “My uncle wouldn’t send me a virus,” so you click without thinking.

·       The Festive Mood: During New Year’s, our guard is down. We expect greetings, gifts and offers. Scammers exploit this specific “happy” mindset.

What to Do If You Accidentally Clicked.?

If you or someone you know clicked on a suspicious link, act immediately. Every second counts (cyber experts call this the “Golden Hour”).

       i.          Disconnect Internet: Immediately turn off Wi-Fi and Mobile Data to stop the malware from sending data to hackers.

ii.          Factory Reset: The safest option is to factory reset your phone to wipe out the hidden malware completely.

iii.          Call 1930: Dial the National Cybercrime Helpline number 1930 immediately to report the fraud and potentially freeze any stolen funds.

iv.          Check Bank Accounts: Inform your bank and check for any unauthorized transactions.

Safety Checklist for New Year 2026

·       Don’t Click: If a greeting comes as a link (e.g., bit.ly/newyear2026, .apk or weird URLs), do not click it. Stick to plain text, images or videos directly uploaded to WhatsApp.

·       Check File Types: Never download a file that ends in .APK from WhatsApp unless you are 100% sure what it is.

·       Enable 2-Step Verification: Go to WhatsApp Settings > Account > Two-Step Verification and turn it on. This adds an extra PIN that hackers can’t easily bypass.

·       Play Store Only: Only download apps from the official Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Conclusion

This New Year, the best gift you can give yourself is digital safety. Don’t let a moment of curiosity turn into a financial nightmare. As authorities remind us: “Digital caution is just as important as celebrating offline.”

If you found this alert helpful, don’t keep it to yourself. Warn your family and friends before they click that link.!
